Our philosophy
increase the happiness in our life by reducing unnecessary things.
Objectives of expenses tracking
  1. Increase the saving for short term and long term plan.
  2. Reduce the rubbish/wastage to “safe the world”.
  3. Track the expenses so that we can identify which spending can be reduce.

We are not going to discuss the source of the income in this page. We simply define “income” as the money that you received from your employer or parent.

Basically, there are three main categories of usage on our income;

  1. Daily expenses - which we are spending everyday on food, transport, etc.
  2. Fixed installment/expenses - which we have signed an agreement on paying weekly/monthly basis.
  3. Saving - lastly, we saves the money that we did not spend and hope that it is sufficient for us to live whenever we are not able to earn any income.
Three main categories of expenses
Daily expenses

We may divide the daily expenses into two categories:

  1. Regular/planned expenses - the spending on the basic need that keep us alive.
    • Food/drinks for breakfast, lunch & dinner excluding the luxury food/drinks.
    • Petrol, bus/taxi fare.
  2. Non-regular/unplanned expenses - the spending on the non-basic need mentioned above. We will still be able to live without having any of the following things (except for medical fee but we can stay healthy by having more exercise).
    • Luxury food/drinks.
    • Happy hour.
    • Buy clothes.
    • Birthday party.
    • Wedding party.
    • Medical fee.
    • Surprise traveling.
    • Movie.
    • Entertainment with friend in expensive restaurant.
Fixed installment/expenses

Think thoroughly before you signed any agreement on paying weekly/monthly basis especially on the long term contract. Don’t be optimistic and expect that your income will be increasing yearly. It might a be thinking trap and you could get into trouble.

The fixed installment/expenses can be divided into two categories:

  1. Short term installment/expenses (< 1 year)
    • Mobile phone contract where you will get the latest phone by signing up 1 year contract.
    • Personal loan.
    • Phone bill (fixed amount).
    • Monthly maintenance/service for apartment.
    • House rental.
    • Water/electricity bill.
  2. Long term installment/expenses (> 1 year)
    • Car loan.
    • Housing loan.
    • Life/medical insurance.
    • House insurance.
    • Car insurance.
Saving

Most of the time, saving is the last thing that most people think about it. They save the money that we did not spend.

Anyway, the saving is for the following purposes:

  • For long term planning - such as you want to have a family, buying car, buying house, etc.
  • Save money for the hard time without any income, not capable to work, economic crisis, health problem, sick, etc. Something that we are not sure what will happen.
Actions to reduce our expenses
  • If possible reduce or avoid the fixed installment. Most of the time, this is the killing part to our income. By right, the total fixed installment should not exceed 33% of our income. Imagine that someone who is spending 80% of their income on a housing loan installment and they will live like a zombie, work like a zombie. That’s not fun!
  • If you can find a cheap mobile service subscription, just change the plan to use the cheaper one.
  • Not everyone is required unlimited 3G/4G data plan on their mobile phone. Free wifi and free internet access can be anywhere such as restaurants and some public area.
  • Reduce the unplanned or non-regular expenses, cut down the unnecessary things. For example, eat the expensive croissant or coffee everyday.
  • Giving up luxury things will make you richer (by save more) and it’s not the other way round (which you spent the money).
  • Get healthier by doing exercise regularly. You should be able to reduce the medical fee.
  • Eat what you need but not what you can. There are many restaurants around us but it does not mean that we should keep feeding ourselves even though we are not hungry. Overeating is bad for health in the long run and it requires to pay for medical fee to fix the problem.
  • If possible using credit card to earn the cash rebate. It will help a bit on reducing the overall spending.
  • Try to buy the discounted products such as clothes. Lots of shops are offering season sales or carnival sales. The discount will have a great impact on the non-regular category.
Benefit of reducing expenses
  1. More healthier and more happier - In our environment it is getting less and less unnecessary things. We eat only what we need. We don’t have to worry about the fixed installment. Hence reduce the mental pressure.
  2. More confident - yeah… we save more and more money to make ourselves feel more “confident”.
  3. More freedom - we will get more time to pursue what we want instead of spending time in looking for more money to support our lifestyle. This is what we want to say it about freedom.
Why there is no Budget setting in your app?

“Budget” is for business accounting. We don't need this for tracking personal expenses.

Why there is no Target of saving setting in your app?

Be frankly, regardless how much you earn, the money that we spend on basic need should be more or less the same.

Why our iPhone app is better than others?

We find it very difficult to be successful in reducing expenses without having a good philosophy in the first place. By the time you finished reading the above, you should have a better understanding in the nature of the expense and how your should react on it.
